Overall, the outlook appears to be positive for many of the businesses surveyed. As part of their continued recovery and future growth plans, 42% have, or plan to, invest in automation, which could help to reduce reliance on staff.

Throughout COVID-19, the manufacturing sector has had to adapt and come up with creative solutions to a number of significant challenges. It’s encouraging that, for the first time in over a year, the majority of firms have indicated that they are trading at a higher sales position than they were prior to the pandemic. However, with just under 30% of firms still utilising the furlough scheme when it ended on 30th September, the negative impact of COVID-19 is ongoing for some manufacturing companies.
